Milling, no matter how good the fiber is, produces some loss. Some of our producers choose to have this waste returned back to them for other projects, while others do not.
We collect the clean waste that is left behind throughout the year. It usually amounts to under 0.5%, but adds up over the thousands of pounds we process each year. This clean waste is from carding, pin drafting, and spinning. Generally, this is good fiber that just didn’t quite make it through the processing steps for one reason or another. But, blended together and given a second chance, it makes really unique and fun yarn.
About once per year, we turn this clean waste into into our Everything But The Kitchen Sink yarn. It contains a little bit of everything from alpaca, wool, bamboo, and silk. Each skein is unique, but is generally a gray color with flecks of other colors throughout. This recycled yarn diverts fiber from compost piles and the landfill.
This edition of EBTKS has silk sparkles throughout, giving it a shimmering effect!
Natural Yarn
We believe in processing our yarn without harsh processes like superwashing or acid bathing. While we take multiple steps to remove vegetative matter from the fiber, some may remain in the finished yarn that is usually removable after knitting. After all, animals live outside!
